Students of Butler University were very excited that Spring Sports came back this year for the first time since the pandemic. It has been 2 years since Butler has been able to host Spring Sports. A special tradition for Butler that involves many students and community members coming together to participate in fun challenges and activities throughout campus.

All students are encouraged to sign up for the fun. Spring Sports is hosted as a late night event from 6pm-6am. “Think all-night, grown up version of elementary school field day!” Spring sports is the most exciting event that the Butler community gets involved in. The fun rivalry between the sorority, fraternities, and faculty members on campus keeps the excitement going through the night long events.

Spring Sports are organized by the Butler Ambassadors for Special Olympics (BASO), one of SGA’s largest organizations that they endorse. BASO is also in charge of the Polar Plunge at Butler which happens in January and works with the Washington Township Special Olympic team in the Fall Festival. The main goal of all events that BASO organizes is to spread advocacy for Special Olympics and to increase campus engagement.

Sophomore student at Butler, Lydia Laker, is a prominent member of BASO and very actively involved in Spring Sports. She serves as the Campus Engagement Chair and has taken on many responsibilities for Spring Sports this year.

Laker says her favorite parts about being involved with BASO are, “building friendships with the Washington Township athletes and seeing their smiles at the Polar Plunge, as well as watching the community of Butler come together for some friendly competition.”

Laker has taken on the role of running the BASO social media accounts. She expressed her joy for the return of this beloved campus tradition as she helps boost morale the week leading up to  Spring Sports. She as well has lent a helping hand in designing this year's apparel. Laker along with everyone involved in BASO spent the weeks leading up to Spring Sports coordinating, planning, and organizing events and challenges for everyone to participate in. From the food challenges outside the campus Starbucks to the 2am basketball games in the HRC, a lot of time and planning went into this year’s  successful Spring Sports events.
