Remembering Andrew

The students, faculty, and staff at Butler University have been mourning the loss of an employee, co-worker, and most importantly, a friend. Andrew Cutter, a member of the Atherton Union dining staff, has recently passed away due to Covid-19 complications. Andrew worked in Atherton since 2019, when Bon Appétit took over for the previous service provider for Butler Dining. He was funny, driven, kindhearted, and known and loved by all.

After reaching out to the Bon Appétit staff for comment, it was clear they all cared about him deeply. Jordan Hall, the Executive Chef for Residential Dining, states that “I immediately hit it off with Andrew. Not only due to his love of everything Marvel and comics in general, but because he was such a joyous and ‘marvelous’ individual. Pun intended. Each and every one of our lives were certainly touched by Andrew in various ways. Whether it was through his smile, humor, or sharing his stories and love of being an uncle.”

Hall continues by explaining how “[Andrew] showed such passion for his job and taking care of the students at Butler University. Whether it was through that one-of-a-kind smile or engaging in conversations with them about their days.”

When SGA discovered the loss of Andrew, they knew they wanted to do something special in regards to his contribution to student care, wellbeing, and the Bon Appétit staff. While specifications are still being discussed, Brooke Hazel, director of PR for the Student Government Association, explained the plans to honor Andrew. “We are honored to be able to work with Butler Administration to honor and remember Andrew Cutter. Andrew was such a beloved member of Butler’s staff and one of the friendliest faces seen around campus. This community meant so much to Andrew and SGA wants to honor him in a way that will remain at the university that he loved.”

As our campus reflects on Andrew’s time at Butler, here are some very meaningful statements from his Atherton Dining family:

“I will never forget when Andrew and I would first see each other in the morning. We would always say ‘booyah!’ to one another. That was our thing!”

- Lynn Murphy, Union Chapter President

“I would always help Andrew take pictures of his plates to send to his mom as she wanted to make sure that he was eating right. Every time I would see his mom, she would always thank me and tell me how proud she was of him.”

- Chef Wes

“I remember when Andrew would sometimes hide his second plate during his facetime session with his mother, and also his laugh that I am going to miss.”

- Maretha Millbrooks, Kitchen Leader

“It was one day that Andrew was at work, and I was checking things out at the salad bar. He was leaning up against the salad bar and he looked at me and asked if I was checking him out or the food. I laughed so hard!”

- Tanya Gray, Garde Manager (cold kitchen)

“I remember him talking to me about his involvement in the Special Olympics and how he played basketball and cycling as part of the events. He had a passion for Marvel and comics as well and I enjoyed talking to him about them.”

- Maria Perez, Café Server

“Andrew was a great friend to me. I cared about him, and he will be missed a lot!”

- Scott Perry, Utility and close friend

“I remember a day where Andrew was putting out the fruit, and he was smiling from ear to ear. I asked him what he was smiling at? He asked me “Did [I] know someone who was looking for a good man and I remember just laughing.”

- Elmira Bowens, Head Baker

Andrew had such a sunshine-like presence and infectious attitude that will always be remembered by the students and staff of Butler University. SGA looks forward to working with Butler Administration as we honor his hard work and dedication.
