After the article centering around conditions students have had to deal with at Butler Terrace, the Butler Administrative officials mentioned in the article, as well as others that have positions relating to the situation, were contacted to see if these problems were previously known and are being addressed.

Before spring break, the Carillon had the opportunity to bring forth student concerns regarding the junior housing complex, Butler Terrace. Since then, Carillon staff has reached out to administrative officials both mentioned in the article as well as with high-ranking positions relating to what was brought forth by students in said article.

Administrative officials relating to Housing, Finance and Administration and Operations and Management Services, as well as the Dean of Students and Chief Information Officer, were contacted. Of those offices contacted, three responded to the Carillon’s request for an interview.

Martha Dziwlik was initially emailed, as she was directly mentioned in the article, and suggested that the Carillon seek an interview from Bruce Arick as University Facilities and BUPD report directly to him and his department.

Bruce Arick, Vice President of Finance and Administration, initially agreed to meet for an interview. However, Arick asked the Carillon via email to publish a statement in lieu of the interview that was scheduled to occur this past week.

“Butler University addresses issues we identify in all of our campus residences before students move in,” Arick wrote. “After moving in, it is important that students contact the University with issues as soon as they are identified, so that we can respond as quickly as possible to make any necessary repairs. For technology issues, students should contact 317-940-4357; for facility issues, visit Fix My Butler via our website and submit a service request; and call BUPD at 317-940-9999 for emergencies, or 317-940-2873 non-emergency events.”

Patrick Keller, Manager of Operations and Building Maintenance, was emailed twice–on March 4th and March 11th–to no response. Additionally, Pete Williams, Chief Information Officer, was emailed twice on the dates listed above as well, to no response.

Shannon Mulqueen, Director of Residence Life, also responded to the Carillon’s request for an interview with a statement.

“Butler University addresses issues we identify in all of our campus residences before students move in,” Mulqueen wrote.

Mulqueen also wanted to reassure students that issues that have been reported to Residence Life and University Facilities have been addressed in some way.

“For some examples, we addressed the WiFi concerns, installed cameras to enhance security, and responded to cleaning concerns in individual units,” Mulqueen wrote. “Many of these types of concerns result in personal visits from my office and/or Facilities to ensure any issues are resolved and to meet with the student.”

Students are encouraged to contact one of the following numbers if they have any questions or need any assistance with their living conditions: 317-940-4357 for technology issues, 317-940-9999 for emergencies and 317-940-2873 for non-emergencies.
