Butler University is blessed with a large donor network that graciously helps to support the University’s students, faculty, and staff. Fundraising is such an integral part of the University that two days in particular have been dedicated to advancing Butler. These days are called the Butler Day of Giving and this is the seventh year in a row that such an event has taken place. This year, the Butler Day of Giving happened on February 23rd and 24th. During this time period, Butler successfully raised $585,134. This demonstrates the incredible support and generosity that exists within the Butler and Indianapolis communities.

Specific departments and organizations around campus contributed to the Butler Day of Giving in order to show their support towards the University. On Wednesday, February 23rd, the Butler University Student Government Association (SGA) donated $8,000 to the Butler Emergency Assistance Fund. This fund is extremely important to SGA as it aids in their mission to better the student experience.

The Butler Emergency Assistance Fund supports students with unexpected financial needs that impact students’ ability to be academically successful. The money within the Butler Emergency Assistance Fund helps to protect Butler students by providing assistance with medical expenses, housing or tuition costs, transportation needs, replacing items from theft, addressing family or personal needs, and recovering from natural disasters.

SGA alone has donated a total of $45,100 in the past three years towards the fund. Student Body President Will Gigerich spoke on behalf of SGA and their involvement, stating, “This is a way we can directly financially support students, and doing that through the University makes the most sense for us.” Gigerich mentioned confidentiality as a primary reason why he believes these funds should be granted through the University as opposed to through individual grants from the Student Senate. SGA’s commitment to providing funding to the Butler Emergency Assistance Fund demonstrates the organization’s commitment to providing multifaceted support to the student body.

To apply for funds from the Butler Emergency Assistance Fund, visit the Office of Financial Aid in Robertson Hall or visit the fund’s website.
