Campus Safety Walk

SGA has been putting on Campus Safety Walks for a decade now, with the most recent one happening this past Wednesday.

Last Wednesday (2/22), a small group of SGA members walked around campus for a Campus Safety Walk. It was led by SGA Chief of Staff Katie Stanley, joined by BUPD officers and Manager of Facilities Operations John Lacheta. Campus Safety Walks have been going on for about a decade, and their purpose is to make campus safer.

“We walk the heavily and less heavily trafficked paths of campus to search for lighting, camera, and other safety solutions,” says Chief of Staff Stanley. After identifying areas that could use improvement, work orders are submitted to the University to rectify the issue(s). Installing new cameras, fixing broken lights, or other things could be necessary. Work orders are also submitted to the city of Indianapolis to encourage them to fix the lighting around campus that they maintain.

Since the last walk that occurred last semester, many improvements have been made. Senate Resolution 2223-068, which passed on February 1st, provides for new floodlights on one side of the HRC; IndyGo has been lobbied for a light for the bus stop on Butler Way; Indianapolis has been lobbied for a stop sign at Hampton & Crown; 15 work orders for lighting have been submitted; and other lights on campus have been fixed.

Chief of Staff Stanley will share the findings of the most recent Campus Safety Walk at this week’s SGA Senate Meeting (3/1). Students with safety concerns, feedback, or questions can always reach out to sga@butler.edu.
