Last week was Eating Disorder Awareness Week, and at Butler University, many students gathered to spread information and educate others on the importance of such a prevalent issue. Eating Disorder Awareness Week is incredibly important as it allows a platform to destigmatize such a standard set of disorders. Elijah Heslop, director of the SGA Mental Health and Well-Being Board, stated that “One thing we want to make clear this week is that eating disorders affect individuals of all body types, genders, races, and lifestyles.” Almost 10% of people will struggle with an eating disorder in their lifetime. He mentions that high-achieving environments, like Butler, are prone to a higher risk of psychiatric illnesses; therefore, it is important to create a conversation around the topic.

At Butler University, multiple events were held to spark this conversation. There was a snack bag packing, a tabling event with Butler’s dietician, Katy Maher, and numerous social media campaigns and posts with resources and information.

Additionally, a clothing drive for Thrifty Threads, the Julian Center’s donation store was held throughout the week. The clothing drive offered students an opportunity to discard items that they no longer loved, or simply wanted to get rid of. Bins were placed in the lobbies of all residence halls, as well as outside the SGA office, and were donated at 2:00 pm last Friday, March 3rd.

Students are encouraged to continue educating themselves on the issue and seek help or guidance. Contact sga@butler.edu or eheslop@butler.edu with any questions or ideas for future events. Student organizations that are interested in partnering on events are welcomed, as well.
