SGA’s Election Oversight Commission: What You Need to Know

Dylan Noble | dnoble@butler.edu

Every Spring and Fall Semester, the SGA holds elections for various offices. But who runs these elections? This responsibility falls to the Election Oversight Commission.

The Election Oversight Commission (EOC), as laid out in the SGA Constitution and General Bylaws, is made up of all Justices in the Judicial Branch. It is headed by Justice Amelia Ball, appointed to the role at the beginning of the school year.

“We run both the fall and spring elections,” says Justice Ball. “This includes working with SGA’s PR director, having candidate meetings, allotting budgets, dealing with election violations if they come up, hosting debates (in the spring), and a host of other tasks that come with it.”

Every spring, the EOC revises election guidelines, pending approval by the Senate. According to Justice Ball, these “often come after a learning experience from the previous semester,” allowing elections to function more smoothly and effectively than before.

New election guidelines were recently approved by the Senate. One of the significant changes was an increase in allotted campaign expenses to $100 for Senate candidates and $1,000 for Presidential candidates, up from $50 and $500, respectively.
